The Spring Sting

Transitioning from winter to spring is always full of hope and renewal.

It is also full of over-programming (school), over-scheduling (us) and overwhelm (still us).

Here's how it happens...

We work through the busy end-of-year holiday rush only to land in the funk of February; which, if we're being honest starts sometime in mid-January when the guilt of "failed"resolutions sets in.

It is literally a cold and dark time which can feel dismal and hibernat-y. (You know what I mean; just go with it.)

Then, we (finally) make it to March when spring brings a glimmer of hope with brighter, warmer days; and we start making plans.

By mid-April, we feel the spring sting: There is something on the calendar every night, the weekends are packed through Memorial Day and the reality of what it will take to orchestrate all of it weighs heavy on our minds.

Side note: Remember in the heart of the pandemic when we declared that we wouldn't go back to being so busy? Mmmhmm. Me too.

It's time to pivot, friends.

Spring is busy every year (okay, maybe not so much the last two years). Yet, when it shows up (as we've been so desperately hoping it finally would) we're shocked by the busyness of it... Every. Time.

As moms, we have a name for the season of anticipating fall. It's called back-to-school. It has a vibe and a to-do list a mile long, and because it's a known thing with a deadline, we tackle it in advance of the busy fall.

We need that for spring! Back-to-spring doesn't have the same ring to it... we'll have to workshop that title (in our spare time)... but you get the idea.

What's on your back-to-spring list?

Here's a list of things that list might include:

  • start prepping for end-of-year school programming (concerts, graduations, teacher-gifts, etc.)
  • update calendar with new spring sports/activities
  • purchase new equipment for spring sports/activities
  • clean out the entry/mudroom to make space for all the new equipment
  • set up new carpools
  • clean out closets to make space for spring clothing
  • have a plan for donating all the stuff you cleaned out
  • incorporate outdoor play time into the schedule
  • prepare taxes
  • clean-up the yard
  • take bikes and outdoor toys/gear out of storage in the garage
  • make plans for summer travel

The glaring difference between fall and spring is that spring doesn't have a deadline like fall's greatly anticipated first day of school. Instead, we have to be intentional about getting ahead of the spring busyness.

The BIZI Method, our mom life management system, provides ten detailed checklists designed to anticipate the pivoting that must happen throughout the year. We call them Seasonal Projects.

The projects span beyond the four seasons to include holiday planning and recovery, a family safety checklist as well as the aforementioned back-to-school checklist, to name a few.

Let's compare notes!

This Friday in The Grace Lab on Zoom we'll continue brainstorming the spring checklist - so bring your list!

We'll start the conversation with a podcast chat. This week's podcast is about youth sports, which might seem off-topic, but don't be fooled. It embodies the very busyness that is at the heart of this week's discussion.

Here are the details for the call...

👩🏽‍💻 The Grace Lab

📆 Join us this Friday, 4/15, at 2pm ET in the Grace Lab on Zoom for our weekly community call. The call is very casual and all are welcome!

🎧 Listen to this podcast episode prior to the call: Youth Sports: If You Must (48:34) then meet us on Zoom. We start every call with a podcast chat to get the conversation going!

📣 RSVP to get a reminder an hour before the call.

  1. Head over to our community for busy moms, called BIZI.
  2. Select 'Events' in the menu
  3. Click on this week's call
  4. Select 'RSVP' and follow the prompts.

You can always join the call without RSVPing, you just won't get the reminder email with the podcast episode and zoom link (which is handy to have quick access to in your inbox - just saying).

Likewise, if you RSVP and then can't make it, no sweat. We get it, you're busy!

NOTE: if you are new to the community, you'll be prompted to create a BIZI account. It's free and just takes a few seconds. See you there!

Grace in Home | Week #1 of 8 Why do we spring clean? This week we shift to our next 8-week series where we'll cover all things HOME! As I sat down to write this issue, I knew I wanted to dip a toe into the topic of spring cleaning. It got me wondering where this idea of spring cleaning came from, so I Googled it. I found an article called How Spring Cleaning Became an Annual Tradition and was surprised to find that it is rooted in religion, culture and biology. Who knew? This passage from the...

Grace in Growth | Week #8 of 8 I'm not a goal setter There, I said it. In my 45+ years, I've simply not had success with goal setting. As someone who has spent most of her life as a self-proclaimed over-achiever, that comes as a surprise even to me. However, as a highly sensitive, anxiety-ridden person, I've had to throw in the towel because the energy drain of the repeated failure is too daunting. Are goals not new year's resolutions in sheep's clothing?... Bound to be eaten by the big, bad...

Grace in Growth | Week #6 of 8 Growth and Vacation What does vacation have to do with personal growth? Maybe nothing; in which case what you're about to read could be construed as a stretch. The thing is, growth happens when we discover a better way to move forward... a way that frees us from the undertow of the old way and allows us to, well... grow. Traveling is hard on moms Do you get family-vacation anxiety? Between the planning, the list-making, the overthinking, the over-packing,...
